Standing room only

So this morning I start the "early shift" at work which means I'm supposed to be at my desk at 07:30. This requires me to be at the train station before the 05:56 pulls in. I duly arrived in plenty of time only to discover my train was delayed, and the next one was cancelled. Over the next hour and a half I heard subsequent trains being called as "delayed due to engineering works", "cancelled", and "delayed due to signal failure". Frustratingly the electronic indicator boards would tell passengers that a train was delayed, thus raising hope that it would eventually arrive. Minutes later the same train would show as cancelled, thus dashing any hope.
