I feel so a-gadoo-shamed

Clares mum is here at home with us whilst we wait for the baby to come. This just happened:-

mum: “Sophie, go and ask Daddy what the words to Agadoo are”
Sophie: “Daddy, what are the words to Agadoo?”
me:

alan@hactar:/mnt/music$ find | grep -i agadoo
./Various Artists/The_Best_Of_The_80s/Black lace. Agadoo.mp3
alan@hactar:/mnt/music$ beep-media-player \
./Various\ Artists/The_Best_Of_The_80s/Black\ lace.\ Agadoo.mp3 &

At which point they both come in and start singing and dancing.

I’ll hang my head in shame.

Metros I have been on

This meme seems to be doing the rounds.

Of course here in the UK where the underground rail system was first installed we just call it the “underground” or “tube”.

Another convert to Free and Open Software

One of the guys in the office where I work is a true capitalist. He says he pays for software because it keeps the economy going. I can kind of see his argument, but my take is “why should I pay if I don’t have to?”.

I’ve had a wodge of Ubuntu CDs on my desk for a while. The collection has grown to include Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu and The Open CD.

My collegue has been complaining that his installation of Word/Excel and Outlook has become somehow screwed up. It’s likely with a little work he could fix it, but I really don’t want to offer help in that area. I do my best to avoid supporting Windows wherever possible if I don’t have to, it’s just too time consuming.

Formatting hard disks for fun and profit

After seeing a story dugg on digg about recovering after you “accidentally wipe your hard drive”, it reminded me of a story I often recount but have never blogged.

Many years ago I worked as a contract helpdesk operative for Deloitte & Touche in London. They had a number of offices we supported near Blackfriars. I worked there around the time that Windows 3.11 was getting popular. Many of the employees used Microsoft Office under Windows 3.11 on desktop PCs that had a roughly standard build.

Screencasting Tech Talk

I recently gave a talk at my local Linux User Group about Screencasting called Recording desktop sessions to video. You can watch it by clicking the links on the Tech Talks page on my local LUG wiki. You can also watch it via google video.

I wasn’t completely happy with the talk as I’d rushed through some topics and not covered some areas in the amount of detail I’d liked. So I decided to write down what I was trying to say. I have split it into two parts. Part one is available here on popey.com, part two will be available soon.
