Increasing Screencast Activity

Since setting up the screencast team about 6 months ago I have neglected it somewhat. After a flurry of screencasts made over a period of just a week or so it’s all gone quiet. I don’t really want to go into the reasons why, but there is good news.

More screencasts are on the way. We have contributions from other Ubuntu users which I’m putting online. I am also setting aside more time to make some more screencasts myself. I have also been working on the format and delivery of the screencasts along with better codec support and a more robust workflow for me.

The first of the contributed screencasts I have just put online is a great one from Andrew Gee. It’s titled “Printing In Ubuntu” and covers the basics of configuring a printer in Ubuntu. This is the first screencast where we have hosted a streamable flash version on the site itself rather than just linking to google video. This means we have a much better quality flash video (full 1024×768 rather than the heavily scaled google video).

There are two sizes of the flash video, full size 1024×768 and a scaled down 800×600 (which is susprisingly readable). We also have the videos available to download as OGG (theora/vorbis) and AVI (XviD/MP3). You’ll find links to the streamable and downloadable video below. If we get no complaints (*) then we’ll make all the videos available in these formats.

More to follow soon. Comments/requests/offers of help welcome of course.

Edit: I also added a link to the RSS feed for the screencasts site.

(*) Other than the usual “flash is evil” complaints.

A good point. I have the originals and could re-encode them to improve the quality. I have considered re-recording a few of them too. Thanks for the tip, I’ll give that a go.

I do also need to update the wiki. It’s at the top of my list – after encoding screencasts I get sent :)

Well done on finding this far superior form of screencasting. I would suggest that the original screencasts are so degraded compared to the printing video that you may consider remaking those previous videos.

It may also be worth updating the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ScreencastTeam/RecordingScreencasts

BTW your screencasts are very informative, I look forward to seeing more :) Not a cube in sight!

I have found the qemu method of recording less successful on my 1 Ghz machine and found record my desktop to be a better way to capture the screen activity. Sadly I a m a novice but I hope to learn :)

    Welcome Back.

The printing screencast is great. Looking forward to seeing more and doing more.

Thanks. It did take me a long time to make that screencast though :)
