What goes in must come out

The portions here in America are really large...

Ubuntu Developer Summit 2007 kicked off

It's now day two of UDS Boston, where the Ubuntu developer community gets together to thrash out what's going to be in the next release of Ubuntu.
So far I've attended sessions about ebox, the Intel Classmate PC, server security, Gobuntu, identifying users and local groups and multi monitor config support. The schedule for the rest of the week is looking pretty busy, so I'll report more when I get time (between sessions and beer).

FOSSCamp 2007 Day One

Today was the first day of FOSSCamp, the Un-conference in Boston. The idea behind an Un-conference is that there is no schedule posted before the event. Instead during the event participants post things they are interested in talking about on a board. Here at Hotel@MIT, rooms were set out with power points (for laptops), drinks and sweets to keep us going. In the main hall where the schedule was maintained we had drinks and snacks on-tap all day.

Planes Trains and Automobiles

My journey from home to Boston was somewhat more convoluted than I imagined, but good fun and not too stressful. I had already packed my suitcase on Thursday night so I was pretty much ready to go on Friday morning. I had to pop out of the house to run an errand, and on the way out said to my wife "Clare, explain baggage carousels to Sophie (my 4 year old daughter) and put some stickers on my case". I now have a case covered in smiley faces, stickers of Pooh Bear and Tigger, and lots of little sparkly stars. There's no way I'll mix-up my luggage at the airport now!

Getting Ready for UDS Boston

This blog post is really aimed at my friends and family, so apologies to the Ubuntu community if you know all this already. I don't use Windows on my computer. Like an increasing number of people, I use Ubuntu Linux every day. For me, Ubuntu has put some of the fun back into computing and it makes me smile when I see other people running free software such as Linux.
