Enormously appropriate, given that this looks like the first steps towards what Sun did to their tradearmed name “Java”…. short version: it’s bad. Real bad.
Do you think that all of the comments on this subject are misguided and/or misinformed?
If so, it would greatly further the discussion if you take the time to explain why. Although I’ve seen some misguided comments on this subject, I’ve seen quite a few other comments that seem to me to be the natural expression of a valid and justifiable opinion. I think this post undermines those.
Actually no. Some of the comments on this topic seem articulate, well thought out and seem to be meant in the best possible way. Others seem to characterise Canonical as some evil corporate entity which has no vested interest in Ubuntu (as a project and a distro) surviving.
I appreciate your opinion that my blog post might undermine the valid, lucid and coherent posts. That doesn’t detract from the fact that a significant chunk of the Ubuntu community seem hell-bent on jumping on any and every commercial activity of Canonical (and as an extension the Ubuntu project as a whole) and characterise those activities as not in the best interest of the community as a whole.
Whilst everyone (myself and yourself included) are entitled to their opinion, I personally believe as the quantity of posts about this topic has risen, the quality has dropped.
I have of course not mentioned my own personal opinion about Ubuntu One because I don’t feel the world needs yet another blog post about it. Hence me injecting a touch of Friday humour into the discussion. Nothing more.
If people within the Ubuntu community disagree, search for facts, politely argue or merely question your arguments (which are…?), you simply dismiss their concerns and label them misinformed and spouting misguided vitriol?

I almost rolled my eyes in a “not another one of these” fashion. It brought a smile to my face instead. Thanks.

Haha, good one, Alan.
I’m also sick of these posts now.

One Canonical Truth[tm?]?
Thanks, the clarification makes the original post a lot clearer, and I appreciate it. And I have nothing against a bit of Friday humour
laugh at the way some seem to get so wound-up by events over which they have no influence or relevance.
Bring on Ubuntu One!!
Been waiting for this.
