Nope. Given nv worked well enough for 2D I didn't think nouveau worth trying given the 3D stuff is still very experimental.

Thanks mate for the fast reply.

I'll give that a try and see how it works out.

Nonetheless I would wish for remote desktop applications to be as simple as Ubuntu in many parts... or maybe have a more beginner focused trouble shooting build in!?

You could do VNC over ssh tunnel?

ssh -l59000:localhost:5900 user@remotemachine.dyndns.org

To tunnel 59000 (locally) to 5900 (the vnc port) over the ssh connection.

Then run "vncviewer localhost::59000" (note two colons to indicate we're choosing port not display number), and it should connect to the VNC server running at the remote end.

Hi there,
I too have this Mumbuntu project - its been running now approx 2 years and I'm still not 100% satisfied :-/

...but from the start:
My mum always had to deal with computers, her first was a 386 33Mhz running DOS and Star Writer, but for her it was always forced upon her thus she is still quite insecure about braking things today.

As I was living around the corner I figured I install a Xubuntu (due to low spec hardware) and make the machine less breakable for her.

Well shes been running Xubuntu on 2 consecutive computers for 2 years and most of the time it works.

Same as you I've set up a DynDNS account so I can reach her without explaining how to tell me her IP (the number in this popup box...)
I have a SSH server running so I can connect via SSH and my GPG key to her.
I've installed skype and pidgin, created accounts and set everything up for her.

The sad thing is I usually run into problems where I've never imagined there would be any. I had issues installing Xubuntu because the FB mode could not be detected properly, issues with panels going missing every so often, skype starting dozens of times and hogging the system.

But my greatest issue is that I still haven't worked out how to set up a Remote Desktop "environment" so I can see what she sees. (That was one thing I've been promising her ever since :-(( )
Now I live on the other end of the world and have to work in the CLI over SSH and I'm not good at it :-\

I've tried various programs: gitso, https://launchpad.net/remote-help-assistant, freeNX with all I ended up with issues I could not solve myself or did not get any helping answers in forums or IRC.
By now I guess it is a combination of crappy ISP branded router and some X.org display hickup what causes my grief.

Is there a good troubleshooting document e.g. for gitso?

Thanks for sharing these posts
