What are you using machines for

Paul asks “What are you using machines for” on his blog.

Being a geek I have a relatively large number of computers (compared with the average person), but probably not as many or as varied as other geeks. I’d be interested to see how my setup compares to some others.

Here’s the current setup at popey towers:-

I Dont Like Brown!

Apologies to Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke

I see this morning through reading Robitaille’s Blog that Paul Thurrot doesn’t like the brown theme that Ubuntu has by default.

Paul (a major league Windows fan/fanboy/apologist/weenie [delete as applicable]) tells us that he has installed the latest version of Ubuntu under VMWare, and the only thing he has to say about it is that he doesn’t like the brown theme!

Command Not Found

I love this new feature in Ubuntu Feisty..

Edit: According to these pages this is also in Ubuntu Edgy (6.10), the current stable release.

If you type a command on Linux that doesn’t exist, normally you get this:-

  alan@bishop:~$ mplayer
  -bash: mplayer: command not found

With the package command-not-found installed (which is by default installed as of Ubuntu 7.04 [Feisty] [due out in April]) you get something like this:-

  alan@tigger:~$ mplayer
  The program 'mplayer' can be found in the following packages:
   * mplayer-nogui
   * mplayer
  Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
  Make sure you have the 'multiverse' component enabled
  -bash: mplayer: command not found

How cool is that!?

Ubuntu is sexy alright

Could the new Ubuntu Splash get any more phallic?

Er, no.

Thanks to Lee for the pic.

Weekend Geek-out

Well, as Tony points out, that time of year has come around again where we go to Brussells for this little thing called FOSDEM.

The special blend of geek lectures, friends and Belgian beer have previously made for a great weekend. I suspect this might be another good one. See you there Tony!
