I'm glad I'm not the only one who has been ridiculed for my use of various Linux distros over the years... (First SuSE 9.1 Pro, then on to OpenSUSE 10 and 10.1 before switching to Kubuntu).. I've had people literally laugh in my face when they looked at my aging PowerBook G3 under Kubuntu Breezy. Amazingly, this has stopped since I got my new Toshiba notebook running Edgy, and later Feisty, however.
I do agree with all your points, though. However, the whole compatibility thing isn't too bad, considering that I've been using OpenOffice since 2004 and regularly collaborating with M$ Office users without a lot of trouble. (Powerpoint presentations being the only thorn in the side, and this has been fixed with the later releases of KOffice and the release of OpenOffice 2.0)
Overall, when people ask what I recommend, I'll reach into my bag, pull out my laptop and start showing off Kubuntu.

Note that I specify Kubuntu, as opposed to Ubuntu. I just prefer KDE, but we're still in the same community.. ;-) And, it shows how much more customizable that Ubuntu is, compared to Windows or Mac OSX, since we don't even have to use the same DE..
