Im afraid the problem is not limited to xps systems. I have a Inspiron 9400 with a geforce 7800 graphics card which is now showing the same symptoms Alan has described.
Thank you for making this article Alan as it has shed some light on my prediciment. My laptop is showing the same screens as you have shown in your screenshots. Unfortunately, my warranty has expired and am now awaiting a phone call from Dell. I will find out soon how much the service call will be and im not looking forward to it.
This is in fact the second time the graphics card has failed on me. Im really regrettng the fact that i didnt extend my warranty. But i feel that Dell are well aware of this widespread problem and they wont do anything about it on purpose so that their customers fork out more money on their warranties. I wont be buying a Dell again.
