Ok my hard drive died first. I replaced it and a couple of days later noticed these strange lines and figures on the screen. Can't change resolution or anything. Dell diagnostics say something is wrong with the video card and to contact Dell support. As it's out of warranty i won't be going there.
If anyone at all has found another reason why this has happened with a possible fix (apart from total gpu failure and replacement) please tell us here.
Also i've found a link to a XPS M170 compatible graphics cards but I'm not sure if they really work. See here: http://www.portableparts.co.uk/products/product.asp?pid=10824&l=M170
Again if anyone has tried fixing the problem with a cheaper gpu and it's worked let us know, i don't fancy waiting to find a 6800 go ultra on ebay for a fortune.
